Making a Male Emo Doll
Give your doll an emo haircut. Make sure your male fashion doll has synthetic hair you will be able to work with. Blond dolls are easier to work with as their hair is easiest to color, but if you want your doll to have straight black hair, you can just start with a black-haired doll. Plan the look you want your doll to have ahead of time; the easiest and most common emo haircut would include swooping asymmetrical bangs. Brush your doll's hair forward over its face and cut in a downward angle from about the middle of the forehead down and out towards the cheek. If you prefer a shorter style, or your doll came with shorter hair, you can fashion a Mohawk and use glue to hold it in place.
Color your doll's hair. If your doll is blond, use permanent markers to add color. Place small pieces of blank paper between the hair and the doll's head to prevent the markers from bleeding onto the plastic. Color in small segments of hair in the color of your choice. Allow the ink to dry fully to avoid smudging and remove paper from under the doll's hair.
Dress your doll. It is probably easier to alter the clothes your doll came with, or buy additional outfits specific to its brand. Carefully cut holes in the knees of jeans, or write your favorite emo band's name or logo onto a white t-shirt using permanent markers. Consider using female doll's jeans (skinny jeans, etc.) to dress your male doll. Look for clothes with stripes or skulls, or leather or denim jackets. Cut or carefully tear clothing as you see fit. Use fishnet stockings on arms for a more Goth look. If your doll has a hooded sweatshirt, carefully poke a hole in the sleeves to fit over the doll's thumbs. Be creative
Do your doll's makeup. Outline your doll's eyes with a fine-tipped black marker for that emo boy eyeliner look.
Making a Female Emo Doll
Cut your doll's hair. Female dolls generally have very long hair and are much easier to style. Cut it into any angular, asymmetrical cut you want. Try an extreme side part by combing the doll's hair over its head so the part appears just above one ear.
Color your doll's hair. Slip a small piece of paper under the hair to protect the doll's head. Most female fashion dolls are blond; once again, blond dolls are easier to work with. Color in sections of your doll's hair with the color or colors of your choice. To create a 'raccoon tail' style common among emo/scene kids, use clear tape to section off and protect small horizontal sections of hair while you color around the tape with a black marker. Let the ink dry and remove tape and paper.
Dress your doll. Female fashion dolls usually have a wider variety of clothes available. Look for skinny jeans, jeans with an acid-washed look, plaid skirts, hooded sweatshirts, or anything black or with stripes or skulls. Again, you can customize a plain white t-shirt by drawing your favorite band's logo. Use scissors to cut or tear artfully-placed holes in jeans or even t-shirts.
Do your doll's makeup. Use permanent markers to outline your doll's eyes in black. Use other colors to create bright or smokey eyeshadow looks. Be creative and don't be afraid to color over any existing makeup designs on the doll!
