How to Make My Own BJD Eyes

Creating your own ball-jointed doll (BJD) eyes with a few basic materials can be both entertaining and rewarding. Dolls' eyes come in all shapes and sizes and can be customized by their color and size to create different looks to match their clothing and character.

BJDs have a porcelain appearance because they are made of a polyurethane resin mix, and giving them a new set of eyes can make them appear more individual.

  • Eye design template
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Glass marbles or other doll eyes

Instructions

    • 1

Draw or trace the desired pair of eyes from an eye design template onto paper. Measuring the template eyes and sketched eyes helps with that task.

    • 2

Compare the size of one glass marble or other doll eye against the template.

    • 3

Draw a circle on each marble to mark the eye's iris. Use a pencil and compass.

    • 4

Paint the iris of each eye. Use a fine paintbrush and the acrylic paint color of your choice. Then wait for the paint to dry before proceeding.

    • 5

Draw the pupil for each eye. Using the pencil and compass, draw a small circle inside each iris.

    • 6

Paint each eye pupil black. Then wait for the paint to dry before continuing.

    • 7

Remove the doll's current eyes. Begin by opening the head cap on the back of the ball-jointed doll's head. Then you can take out the old eyes using a knife.

    • 8

Position the new eyes in the eye holes. When their position is correct, place eye putty at the back of the new eyes to hold them in place. The putty should surround the back of the inside of the head cap. Re-check the position of the eyes and adjust the putty as needed.
