How to Restring a Vogue Doll

Vogue is a popular doll company. Originally called Ye Olde Vogue Doll Shoppe, the company was founded by Jennie Adler Graves in 1922. Vintage Vogue dolls are made of composition or hard plastic. The dolls' limbs and heads are fastened or "strung" by means of hooks embedded at the ends to a rubber band or elastic cord. Vintage Vogue dolls such as Ginny, Jill, Toddles, Dora Lee and others are strung dolls. Restring Vogue dolls with a durable rubber band or a loop of elastic cord.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the body onto the table. Organize the left arm and leg to the left of the body and the right arm and leg to the right. Position the head above the body.

    • 2

Measure the body from the neck to the crotch. Divide this measurement by 2 and add 1 inch to determine the length of elastic cord to cut to create a loop. Or, use a rubber band with an unstretched length equaling the modified measurement. Doll bands for specific Vogue dolls are available through doll repair and restoration hospitals. If using elastic, tie the cord ends together to form a loop. Elastic doll cord is available at doll supply and repair stores.

    • 3

Hook the loop or band onto the hook at the end of the left leg. Vogue dolls have bent embedded wire loops at the ends of the limbs and head.

    • 4

Insert a buttonhook, crochet hook, needle nose pliers or hemostats into the neck cavity and down toward the left leg hole.

    • 5

Insert the loop or band attached to the left leg hook into the body cavity. Hook or grip the cord or band with the utensil you've chosen to use. According to This Old Doll website, stringing tools vary and you can use whichever utensil you like as long as it can hook or grip the cord or band and pull it through the limb and neck holes. Ordinary tweezers aren't durable and the cord or band will slip away.

    • 6

Pull the loop or band out through the neck cavity. According to Prilly Charmin Dolls, the most efficient restringing order is up through the left leg, the head, and then down again to the right leg hole. Hook the head hook to the cord or band. Remove the tool. Allow the head to gently snap into place.

    • 7

Insert the tool into the hole of the right leg and grip or hook the left side of the loop or band. Pull the cord or band toward the right leg hole so the loop or band criss-crosses internally in the center. This creates a tighter stringing. Hook the right leg hook to the cord or band. Allow the right leg to snap into place.

    • 8

Use the utensil to enter the left arm hole. Grip or hook the left side of the loop or band. Pull it toward the left arm hole. Affix the left arm hook to the loop or band. Remove the tool, allowing the arm to snap into place.

    • 9

Insert the utensil into the right arm hole. Grasp the right side of the cord or band. Pull it toward the right arm hole. Hook the right arm to the loop or band.
