Porcelain Dolls
Choose the paint you would like to use for making up porcelain dolls. Use more traditional rose and peach paints or funky neon paints, depending on how you care to style the doll. Make sure the paint you are using is specifically for porcelain dolls.
Paint the cheeks with a rose-pink blush. Choose lip color such as pink or peach and eyeshadow color. Eyeshadow can match or complement eye color. Porcelain doll paint for freckles is available at most porcelain doll shops or online supply stores. You can also enhance features, including lashes, according to the Jean Ordquist website.
Print out free doll clothes patterns from websites, if you enjoy making your own doll clothes, or browse for doll clothes online at sites such as the Doll Clothes Superstore. Some online stores offer doll clothes for all types of dolls including American Girl and porcelain dolls.
Other Types of Dolls
Purchase a doll that comes with its own makeup kit. Applying regular makeup on dolls of any kind can run the risk of staining the doll permanently. Doll makeup is easily washed off dolls and human skin, however make sure the doll's instructions indicate this before use.
Paint the eyes, cheeks and lips as desired. Some dolls include fun items like glitter gel pens and body stamps for creating designs and tattoos. Use the glitter gel pen to make stars and hearts on doll cheeks or streak color through hair, if applicable.
Select doll outfits and hairstyles. Many dolls come with mix-and-match outfits; try creating numerous styles such as using a tube top as a skirt or a lace accessory as a jacket. Try interesting hairstyles such as braided ponytails and buns. See the Resources section for more information on doll hairstyles. Doll makeup generally complements doll clothes, however try mixing and matching if you have two or more dolls that come with makeup.
Consider dressing up dolls online via the many dress-up doll games now available on the web; this is also a much less expensive option.
