Things You'll Need
Instructions
Lay nylon sock on a flat surface. Cut across the nylon stock beginning at the top of the heel and across to the front of the sock. This will become the body of the newborn baby doll.
Cut the remaining part of nylon sock, the cuff, lengthwise into 2 equal parts. Cut those 2 pieces horizontally making 4 sections. These will become the arms and legs.
Sew each arm. Turn the fabric to the wrong-side. Sew three sides closed using a needle and color-coordinating thread using a straight-stitch. Half way up the arm, make a slight curve as you sew. This will imitate the bend of the elbow. Leave one side open to allow stuffing. Sew other arm. Repeat process.
Sew leg. Turn the fabric to the wrong-side. Sew three sides closed using a needle and color-coordinating thread using a straight-stitch. Half way up the leg, make a slight curve as you sew. This will imitate the bend of the knee. Leave one side open to facilitate stuffing. Sew other leg. Repeat process.
Stuff the body of the doll. Place enough fiberfill stuffing into the body to give the plump appearance of a newborn baby. Turn the limbs rights-side out. Fold one chenille pipe cleaner in half and cut to the same length as the arm or leg. Tape the ends together with a small piece of masking tape to prevent the pipe cleaner from poking through the nylon. Place pipe cleaner in the middle of each limb and stuff until plump. The pipe cleaner will allow the arms and legs to be bent and positioned.
Sew all the open ends of all the body parts shut by folding the open end inside to form a seam. Use a needle and coordinating thread to whip-stitch the arms, legs and body closed..
Create the head by measuring the body and making a tiny pen mark just above the half-way mark on both sides of the body. Thread a needle with heavy duty, double thread and enter the body at the mark which will be the back of the body. Exit the needle at the mark on the front side. Begin wrapping the thread around to form the neck do this at least 10 times to shape the neck. Tie off the thread, knot and cut the thread.
Attach the arms to the body. Place arms just below and to the sides of the head. Place the seam facing down with the curve of the arm up. Whip-stitch both arms in place.
Attach the legs to the body. Place legs near the bottom of the body. Position legs with curve of leg facing up. Whip-stitch both legs in place.
Sculpt the newborn baby face. Insert a needle with matching thread into the edge of where the left eye will be placed. Push the needle behind the eye including some of the fiberfill stuffing; exit needle at the outer edge of the eye. Insert needle again into the inner corner.
Pass the needle behind the bridge of the nose to inner corner of the right eye. Repeat process. Pull the thread tight to create an indentation that will be the eye sockets. Tie and knot off thread.
Sculpt the newborn baby mouth. Use needle and thread to whip-stitch the mouth. Sew stitches ¾ inch to 1 inch wide. Catch fiberfill stuffing in the stitches to add dimension to the mouth. Sew a tiny stitch around the center of the stitches to form the lips. Insert needle between lips and exit at the back of the neck. Pull thread tight and tie-off and knot thread.
Add finishing touches to face. Sew tiny blue or black round beads for eyes. Apply pale pink blush with a large, soft make-up brush to cheeks. Blend brush evenly with a soft cloth. Create a wash of pink blush and water. Paint lips with wash. Apply several coats of wash until lips are the color desired.
Add baby hair. Create hair with baby fine gauge yarn. Thread a large-eyed needle with yarn and sew loops of yarn at the top of the head. Sew 24 loops of yarn or as many is desired. Tie- off and knot yarn. Cut loops open and arrange hair. Trim as needed.
