How to Make Doll Accessories

Stores and online catalogs have adorable play accessories for 18-inch dolls, but you can make a whole wardrobe of inexpensive handbags and hats for less than the price of one "designer" doll bag. Doll accessories are a good beginner sewing project for a young seamstress. They can be made quickly and don&'t require use of a sewing machine.

Instructions

  1. Doll Hat

    • 1

Make a doll hat by cutting a 11-by-10-inch rectangle of fleece. The 11-inch side should be the side that stretches. Sew the short sides together, stopping 2 inches from the edge. Pull this tube onto your doll&'s head.

    • 2

Cut a fringe on the top of the hat by cutting 2-inch-long slits every half inch. Cut a 5-by-1/4-inch strip of fleece. Gather the fringe together into a pompom and tie the strip of fleece around it.

    • 3

Fold the brim of the hat up half an inch. Fold the brim up again. Adjust the folds until you are pleased with the look.

    Doll Handbag

    • 4

Make a doll handbag by cutting a 2-inch square of felt and a 4-inch strip of 1/4-inch ribbon. Fold up the bottom of the felt square by 3/4 inch and sew this fold closed on each side of the felt.

    • 5

Turn under the ends of the ribbon by a quarter inch. Sew the ends of the ribbon along the seams. The folded-up ends of the ribbon should be at the fold of the felt. The top of the ribbon will be the handle of the purse, and the ends of the ribbon will run along the side of the purse.

    • 6

Fold down the top of the felt to make the flap of the purse. Sew one side of a snap to the underside of the flap and the other side to the front of the purse. Sew a bead on the front to cover the stitches where you sewed the snap on.

    Doll Sandals

    • 7

Make doll sandals by cutting four ovals of adhesive-backed cork slightly longer than your doll&'s feet. The ovals should all be exactly the same size. Hold an oval of cork on the bottom of the doll&'s foot. Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch ribbon to wrap exactly around the size of the cork and your doll&'s foot.

    • 8

Pull the paper off one cork oval and stick one end of the ribbon to the adhesive, along one side, half an inch from the end of the oval. A quarter inch of the end of the ribbon should be stuck down. Wrap the ribbon over the non-adhesive side of the cork and stick the other end of the ribbon down on the other side of the sandal, so that the ends of the ribbon just meet underneath. This will be the strap on the top of the sandal.

    • 9

Pull the paper off another oval and stick it to the bottom of the shoe, sandwiching the ends of the ribbon in between. Make the other sandal in the same way.
