How to Make a Sailor Doll

A homemade sailor doll makes a great gift for a child, especially one who has a penchant for sailing, the seaside or other nautical activities, or with whom you hope to share your love of the sea.

With relative ease, anyone with a little sewing know-how can design and sew a sailor doll. The doll also can be used as a homey decoration in your seaside cottage or as an adorable prop in a sailing- or boat-inspired nursery.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your doll sailor outfit down on a large piece of paper to carefully draw the outline for your doll so that your finished doll will fit inside the outfit.

Make a simple shape with arms, simple webbed hands (no individual fingers), straight legs and arms, neck and round head.

Draw your pattern about 1/8" oversized to accommodate for the seam allowance you will create when sewing the doll.

    • 2

Lay the pattern down on a piece of your skin-colored felt, pinning it securely.

Cut out the shape with fabric scissors. Repeat to cut out the back of the doll.

    • 3

Sew a 1/8-inch seam around the entire perimeter of the doll using a needle and your skin-colored thread and a basic straight stitch.

Keep your stitches small and leave 1 inch unsewn for turning inside out and stuffing. Tie off the thread with a double knot and trim the excess thread close to the knot.

    • 4

Turn the doll inside out to hide the stitches.

    • 5

Sew eyes and a mouth onto the face of the doll with embroidery thread and needle, being extra careful not to sew through both sides of the doll---only one side.

    • 6

Fill the doll with fiberfill or other soft stuffing using a knitting needle to help stuff the doll until it is fairly firm all over. Sew up the open hole and tie off with a double knot when finished. Cut off the excess thread close to the knot.

    • 7

Sew doll hair onto the top and the back of the head, arranging as you go to create a full head of hair. Trim the hair evenly with scissors, giving your doll a nice haircut.

    • 8

Dress your doll in its sailor outfit and hat.
