How to Make Patterns for Doll Shoes

Doll clothes and accessories can make a doll look different and interesting. The type of clothes that a doll is put in can give the appearance of a tomboy, a girlie-girl or some combination of the two. Shoes are an important part of any doll's outfit. Making shoes is a fun project, but sometimes the ideal shoe patterns are not available or the image of the perfect shoe for the doll is different from shoes that can be found in stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the doll's foot on a piece of paper. This ensures that the doll's shoes will fit the doll and that the pattern will be an appropriate size. Use the measuring tape to determine the area around the doll's foot to avoid having too little fabric.

    • 2

Add a second line approximately 1/2 to 1 inch around the original line. This is the extra fabric needed for sewing the shoes together.

    • 3

Draw the upper part of the shoe as desired. Most doll shoe patterns are simple, such as a knitted baby bootie, so keep the upper part simple. Keep in mind that it will be sewn to the bottom of the shoe, so make sure the upper part can connect. A rectangular shape that curves in the middle can work. Make sure it will be large enough to work as the upper part of the shoe. It can be in one single part or can be made in two separate parts that are ultimately tied together with a ribbon or string. The exact shape can vary depending on personal preference and the exact shoe type. For example, a simple sandal might only need a strip of fabric to wrap around the front of the doll's foot or it could have a few pieces of fabric to go over the top and behind the doll's heel.

Draw the pattern with a dark colored pen on the paper. Add the tracing paper to the top of the original paper and then trace the pattern with a pencil. The pattern can then be cut out and used to make the doll shoes.
