How to Remove Mold from Baby Doll Vinyl

Restoring vinyl dolls is fun and can showcase the beauty of the doll. Sometimes restoration is as simple as cleaning the doll. Dolls often have mold, stains or other dirt that make them look less pristine, but can usually be fixed. Cleaning off mold can be troublesome because mold can be difficult to remove without damaging the vinyl. Fortunately, there are several options available to get rid of mold.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Cotton balls

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any stuffing to avoid damage by water. Most vinyl dolls have materials inside that do not need to be removed, but some materials like paper or kapok, need to be taken out of the doll.

    • 2

Dampen the doll with water. Avoid soaking the doll. The doll should be damp, but not dripping or completely wet. Too much water will damage the doll or the stuffing inside.

    • 3

Apply dish soap to the doll. This should be gently rubbed into the vinyl and then allowed to sit for about five minutes.

    • 4

Use a toothbrush to scrub the vinyl. The toothbrush will often remove most of the mold and dirt. Rinse the doll or use a soft cloth and water to remove the soap. Repeat this method a second time if necessary.

    • 5

Apply baking soda to the vinyl. Baking soda is mildly abrasive, so it is a good option if the soap is not enough to remove the mold. It also helps remove odors. Use a toothbrush to scrub the vinyl.

    • 6

Rinse the doll. Make sure to remove all the soap and baking soda. A wet washcloth can be used to avoid soaking the doll.

    • 7

Apply a vinyl cleaner to the vinyl. Find vinyl cleaner at any auto supply store or online. Twin Pines makes vinyl cleaner specifically for vinyl dolls, but any vinyl cleaner will work. Wipe clean with a damp washcloth.

    • 8

Use cotton balls and dish soap to clean any part of the doll that is not vinyl. Some vinyl dolls have plastic faces, hands and feet. Clean these with cotton balls and dish soap. The cotton ball allows you to easily clean between fingers and in small areas.

    • 9

Check the doll for mold. Most dolls will not require more cleaning, but mold can be difficult to remove and might require additional cleaning.

    • 10

Use bleach mixed in hot water. The mixture should only contain a small amount of bleach and should always be used with hot water. Dip a washcloth into the bleach water and gently wipe the doll. Allow the bleach to sit for a few minutes before cleaning it with plain water. Avoid using bleach on darker fabrics, which can be damaged by the bleach. Bleach should only be used when there are no other options, but it will kill the mold and make it easier to remove.
