How to Apply Hair to a Waldorf Doll

Waldorf dolls are simple, handmade stuffed dolls that are cuddly and encourage a child̵7;s imagination by providing only simple features, rather than a detailed face. The hair of a Waldorf doll is one of its distinguishing features and helps give personality to the doll. Most Waldorf dolls have hair made from thick yarn or wool, which is either sewn directly onto the doll̵7;s head or made into a wig first and then attached.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from the forehead where you want to start the hair to the back of the neck where you want it to end. For a medium-sized doll, this is around 6 inches or so. This will be the width of the hair.

    • 2

Cut pieces of yarn twice as long as you want the hair to be. Lay them out flat on the piece of paper until they are the width that you measured on the doll̵7;s head in Step 1.

    • 3

Using a sewing machine, sew a seam through the middle of the yarn through the paper to help keep the yarn in place. This will be the middle part of the hair. Once the yarn is thoroughly sewn together, remove the paper from the seam, leaving a mat of hair.

    • 4

Place the hair so that the center part is in the center of the forehead, and hand sew it in place, starting from the forehead and going back along the seam until the hair is attached.

    • 5

Position the hair flat around the head, and then stitch it down around the head, so that it lies flat on the head. At this point you can put the hair in pig tails or plaits if you want to, but you must sew it down around the head, or else it could look like a long Mohawk.
