How to Make Mop Head Dolls

Turn trash into treasure by recycling a string mop head into a decorative doll. You can create dolls for all your friends while only spending a few cents to create each one. The mop head forms the head, legs, arms and body and can be outfitted or decorated to fit a number of occasions or themed gifts. Add a smiling face or leave the face blank to give your doll a more traditional look.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the head of the mop from the handle. Remove any metal pieces binding the mop head together. Disinfect the mop if it is dirty and allow it to fully dry. Dye the strings of the mop with Rit dye if you want to add color to your doll. Follow the instructions on the package of the Rit dye and allow it to fully set and dry before continuing.

Cut three to five strands from the center of the mop to tie the head, arms and legs. To create a doll with legs, you'll need five strands total. If you plan to cover the doll and do not need to create legs, you can cut only three strands. Remove them from the center of the mop where they won't be noticed. If you dyed the doll, you can use matching yarn instead of cutting off strands from the mop.

    • 3

Lay the mop head flat, smoothing the strings down, and measure down 1 to 2 inches from the top. This will form the doll head, so adjust the size as needed to create the size doll you want. Wrap a matching colored piece of yarn or one of the mop strings you cut lose around the mop in the spot you measured. Tie the string in a knot behind the mop and pull tight. Keeping the strings tight, tie a second and a third knot if necessary. This will section off part of the mop to form a round head, with the tied section serving as the neck. Cut off excess string.

Separate out an even chunk of string on the left and right sides of the mop to form the arms. Make sure to leave enough in the center of the mop for the legs and body. Measure 1/2 inch down from the tip of each arm and tie with another string in the same fashion you created the head. This forms the hands. Cut off the excess string and trim the ends of the strings forming the hands until they are even.

Measure a few inches down from the neck and tie another string to form the body. This string represents the waist of your doll. If you want to create legs, separate the strings below the waist into two even sections and tie them the same way you did when you created the two arms. You can also skip this part and leave the strings hanging for a skirt.

Dress your doll in handmade or store-bought outfits and sew on eyes and a mouth if you want to give her a face. You can create hair from colored yarn and sew it to the top of the doll's head; keep it long for a doll to practice braiding with.
