Dolls to Make for Fun or Profit

Doll lovers with a creative streak and marketing savvy can make dolls for profit. If your business skills are lacking or you are unable to find a market for your dolls, you can still make them for fun. Doll making is a rewarding hobby for many and a project you can share with a special young person.
  1. Paper Dolls

    • Paper dolls have been around for almost as long as paper itself. Combine modern computer technology with an age-old craft to create paper dolls. Using graphic editing programs, such as Photoshop, make paper dolls and their accessories and clothing. Artwork can be created digitally or manually drawn, and then scanned to create a digital image. If using Photoshop, the layer feature will make it easy to create clothing by tracing over the doll image. Each layer can be printed separately. Specialize in creating paper dolls for youngsters by pasting their likeness onto the face of the doll. All you will need is a digital image of their face and the ability to use a graphic editing program.

    Clothespin Doll

    • Clothespin dolls don't require any special equipment or expensive supplies. The primary requirement is an imagination. These dolls are made from old-fashioned clothespins, the ones without the movable parts. The top of the wooden clothespin has a round ball for the head. If you can't find original clothespins, craft stores sell wooden clothespins that are marketed specifically for use in craft projects. Because the "heads" are rather small, some crafters glue a wooden dowel cap atop the clothespin to make the head. Paint features to the doll's face, twist on a pipe cleaner for the arms and use bits of fabric and notions to make the doll's clothing and hat. Magnets can be added to the doll's back. When designing each doll, consider a theme, such as a bride, fireman or nurse.

    Rag Doll

    • Raggedy Ann is an American rag doll tradition. The first Raggedy Ann, in the early 1900s, was actually a refurbished rag doll. The doll was such a hit with the little girl who received her that more Raggedy Anns (and eventually Raggedy Andy) were made. If sewing is your talent, then developing your own rag doll creation may be the ideal doll for you to make. Rag doll patterns are available at fabric stores. Dolls can be made life-sized or smaller for easier carrying and cuddling.
