Tips from Dollhouse Kits
If you don̵7;t want to purchase a kit and want to make your own homemade Barbie dollhouse from the basement up, consider some of the features of the dollhouse kits designed for the fashion doll. Unlike smaller dollhouses, which are typically more for display than actual play, a dollhouse built for Barbie needs to be one that can be easily moved. If the house is made from wood, it will be an extremely heavy object. Adding rollers to its base, as some dollhouse kit manufacturers do, will make it easier to push the dollhouse from one area in the room or house to another.
Drawers in the Basement
Another convenient feature is drawers along the basement section of the dollhouse. This is a handy place for the youngster to store doll accessories. Some of the dollhouses are built with three sides and others have four sides, with one side having hinged walls that can close when the house is not in play, concealing the contents of the interior.
Cardboard House
If building a homemade Barbie dollhouse from wood is too challenging, even with a kit, there are other options. One is to create separate walls from heavy cardboard. The walls are connected by strips of Velcro. This enables the house to be easily disassembled and stored. When decorating the cardboard, pictures cut from magazines can be applied to the surface with decoupage. These might be images of windows, wallpaper, drapery, doors or other features. Creating such a dollhouse would also be a project suitable for children.
Quilted House
Instead of wood or cardboard, a dollhouse can also be made from fabric. This option is more suitable for those who enjoy quilting. Each wall is a rectangular, mini quilt which fits on a frame. The house̵7;s frame is made from a material such as PVC pipe. Just like the cardboard house, the fabric dollhouse can be disassembled for easy storage. While the cardboard and quilt versions are not as authentic as the wooden dollhouse, they still capture the imagination of children.
