Prepping the Doll's Hair
After years (or in some cases only a few weeks) of love and play, a doll's hair can get a little ratty. The hair has been pulled, tugged, brushed through and brushed out, wetted, dried, you name it. Because of this, the hair will get matted, tangled and will definitely not look like she just came out of the box. To get the tangles out of the hair and to get the doll ready for her new 'do, start with some regular shampoo. Pour a dime-sized drop of shampoo onto the doll's hair. Rub the shampoo in very gently. If you rub too hard the hair's knots will only increase. Rinse all of the shampoo out and add a bit of conditioner. Lightly, brush the conditioner through the doll's hair using a doll hair brush. Rinse the conditioner out and brush through the hair. If the hair brush smoothly brushes through, she's ready for her perm. If there are still a few knots, spray in a hair detangler. This will get the last of the knots out of the hair.
Doll Perm
To get the doll's hair back to the way it was (voluminous and wavy), you have to give her a perm. Start by cutting straws into small pieces. These straw bits will be used as doll rollers. Fill a sauce pot with water and bring it to a boil. While the water is boiling, pour some cold water into a cup and fill it with ice. Reduce the temperature of the sauce pot so the water stays at a simmer (we don't want her hair to melt). Start placing the rollers into the doll's hair just as you would put roller into your own. Section off the hair, roller a section into a roller, then place a bobby pin through it so it stays in place. Do this to all of the hair sections. Very carefully, pour the simmering water over the hair rollers. Directly after, pour the ice water over the hair rollers. Allow the hair to dry for a whole day. Once the hair is completely dried, remove the rollers. The doll's hair will be wavy and full of volume. You can even purchase different straws for a different kind of curl: Using fast food straws (they are thick straws) will give a full look, regular straws will give a full and wavy look and cocktail straws will give a super curly look.
