How to Make a Hitty Doll

Hittys are wooden dolls modeled after the doll that inspired Rachel Field's Newberry Award-Winning Book, "Hitty: Her First Hundred Years." The original Hitty doll is a 6.25-inch doll carved from white ash wood that was purchased in a New York CIty antique shop in the '20s. Hitty is currently held by the Stockbridge Library Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Hitty dolls today can be made from a variety of materials, but must stay true to the style of the original wood Hitty doll. Hittys should have black, wavy hair pulled into a bun and dark blue eyes. Her body is painted flesh-color and her boots and stockings are painted on. She wears a simple pattern dress, a white petticoat, and cotton pantalets.

Instructions

  1. Carving

    • 1

Draw a scale pattern of a girl to 6.25-inches tall. Search the Internet for a pre-existing pattern to save time.

    • 2

Cut small blocks of white ash wood slightly bigger than the size of each pattern piece. Trace pattern onto wood to serve as a guide.

    • 3

Carve each chunk of wood to resemble the shape of each body part in your pattern. You really only need a suggestion, because you will paint finer details on the body later. Hitty's hands are described as "spoon-like," meaning that she has a thumb but undefined fingers.

    • 4

Sand each piece smooth with fine-grit sandpaper. This will eliminate rough spots and allow you to fine-tune the shape of each piece.

    • 5

Carve nose, lips and eyes into head; detail will be painted later. To achieve Hitty's wavy hair, leave a bun-like bump in the back and carve small squares or grooves in bun.

    Arms and Legs

    • 6

Drill a small hole through shoulders of upper torso and waist of lower torso big enough for 3/16-in. dowel to go through. The arms and legs will connect to these dowels and move in pairs.

    • 7

Drill holes through the shoulder and hip of each arm and leg so you can connect them to the dowels. Again, these holes should be big enough to fit a 3/16-inch dowel.

    • 8

Insert dowels through holes in upper and lower torso and center on body. There should be equal lengths hanging out from each end. Apply wood glue to each end.

    • 9

Slide arms and legs onto appropriate dowel end. Hold in place while glue dries. It may be helpful to do one limb at a time.

    • 10

Clip excess so that dowel is even with the outside of arms and legs. Sand for a smooth and even finish and apply wood glue to secure.

    Painting

    • 11

Paint entire body with flesh-colored paint. Allow to dry.

    • 12

Paint feet up to mid-calf black to resemble boots. Paint the rest of the leg up to knee white for stockings.

    • 13

Paint Hitty's hair black, her eyes dark blue with medium-blue irises. Add color to her lips and cheeks.

    • 14

Cover with varnish, if desired. It is unclear whether the original Hitty was varnished or if the gloss is from skin oils.

    Clothing

    • 15

Create a dress for Hitty by choosing a simple pattern, such as a floral. Trace a dress outline and make two copies. Sew the two pieces together (front and back), allowing for arm and neck holes, and you have a dress. You may need to stitch the dress on Hitty if you won't be using velcro or snap closures on the dress.

    • 16

Make a petticoat for Hitty in the same way as you did the dress. The petticoat will have tank-style straps and be made of white cotton.

    • 17

Make a pair of white pantalets, or pantiloons, for Hitty using the same fashion as above. Simply draw pants in your pattern instead, sew the front and back together and you'll have a pair. You can insert a drawstring at the waist to make it easier to dress the doll.

    • 18

Dress your Hitty doll with pantalets first, then petticoat, and top with the dress.
