How to Make Santa Claus Hair on a Doll

Kris Kringle. St. Nicholas. Father Christmas. Santa Claus. He is known by many names, but the sentiment evoked is the same: holiday merriment. According to the History of Santa Claus website, "As early as 1773 the name appeared in the American press as 'St. A Claus,' but it was the popular author Washington Irving who gave Americans their first detailed information about the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas." When making a Santa Claus doll to resemble the image Irving described or the other versions that have developed since, hair can be applied by sewing and the use of adhesives.

Instructions

  1. Adhesive Application of Santa Hair

    • 1

Determine the material your Santa Claus doll is made from. Plastic, rubber, porcelain, bisque, ceramic or other hard materials will call for adhesive applications. Fabric Santa Claus dolls can utilize adhesives or sewn-on hair.

    • 2

Use a vise to grip the doll, or hold firmly. Cut the doll hair or wool to the length desired for Santa's beard and hair.

    • 3

Separate the hair/beard into small clumps measuring approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inches in diameter, depending on the size of the Santa Claus doll. Larger dolls require larger clumps for efficiency.

    • 4

Starting at one of Santa's ears, glue a clump of beard by applying glue under the hair clump with the glue gun, then pressing the beard clump to Santa's face. Apply the clumps of hair in a row around the jawline.

    • 5

For Santa's mustache, glue smaller clumps in a row under the nose and above the lip. Allow to dry and then trim the mustache so that Santa's lips are visible.

    • 6

For hair, start behind one of Santa's ears and glue clumps in a row around the posterior of the crown of the head, leaving a bald spot in the center. Work to the other ear. Allow glue to dry and trim the hair to the desired length.

Sewing Santa Hair to the Doll

    • 7

Separate doll hair into 1/4- to 1/2-inch clumps. Using white thread, sew around the top of each clump so each clump is secure.

    • 8

Place doll on a flat surface. Turn doll upside down so feet are at top.

    • 9

Pin the secured clumps of doll hair in a row around Santa's jawline from ear to ear, upside down, so that the hair of the clump is covering the face. (When turned right side up, the doll's beard will flow down, covering the sewing.)

    • 10

Sew the clumps to the fabric, by hand, one clump at a time. Turn doll right side up. Trim beard.

    • 11

Turn the doll face down. Pin clumps of hair from the back of one ear to the other, upside down, so hair is flowing up and over top of head. (When turned right side up, the hair will flow down, covering sewing.) Leave the top of the head bald. Sew clumps of hair to fabric, by hand, one clump at a time. Turn doll right side up. Trim hair.
