Basic Cleaning and Care Recommendations
Interior floors will need frequent mopping with a non treated dry dust mop. Harsh materials such as sand and dirt will do the most damage to stone flooring so door mats and area rugs should be utilized in order to prevent tracking on the floor. Use caution with vacuum cleaners and their attachments as they can easily scratch the floor surface. It is best to wash any stone surface with neutral cleaning, stone soap or a mild dishwashing detergent and warm water. A rag mop works best on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces is safest. Do not use too much cleaner or it will cause streaking on the surface. Also, products containing lemon or vinegar should never be used as they damage stone. After washing the floor or counter surface with the soap solution, rinse the area thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. If the stone surface is installed in food preparation areas a non toxic sealer may be the best option to help facilitate easier cleaning and prevent damage. Outdoor areas such as patios and walkways should be flushed with a mild bleach solution to remove algae or moss.
Stains and Spills
When spills or stains occur avoid wiping and spreading the spill, instead blot the area immediately with a paper towel. Rinse the area with soap and water several times and dry the area with a soft cloth. If the area remains stained there are steps that can be taken to remove it but the removal process depends upon what actually caused the stain. Oil based stains will darken the stone and should be removed with a soft, liquid bleach cleaner. Organic stains that occur as a result of items such as coffee, tea, urine or food may cause a pinkish brown stain but should come off fairly easily once the source of the stain is removed.
If the stain persists try using a hydrogen peroxide solution with a few drops of ammonia. Iron or rust stains will appear orange or brown in color and must be removed with a poultice. A poultice should be made from part liquid cleaner and part talc. The mixture will create a thick paste that should be spread over the stain, covered with plastic and left to sit for 24 to 48 hours. Ink should be removed with bleach if the stone is lighter but acetone should be used on darker stone. Etches and scratches will need to be refinished and polished by a professional.
