My Twinn dolls are vinyl dolls intended to reflect the image of the child who owns the doll. The dolls can be personalized with eye color, skin tone and hair styles. Matching clothing can be purchased for doll and child to provide an additional level of similarity.
History
The My Twinn concept was born in 1992; it was the brain child of an emergency room physician. According to a story by Will Harper in the November/December issue of Metroactive, the doctor asked his patients why they were attached to their dolls, with the response being, "Because this one looks like me." The physician later sold the business to the Parent Company.
The Parent Company, owners of My Twinn, declared bankruptcy in 2008, causing a disruption in holiday orders. TPC Acquisition, Inc. purchased the operation in early 2009, and My Twinn is again taking orders by its Website and customer service phone number. The 2008 incident was not the first time My Twinn ceased operations. In 2004, the company closed a week before the Christmas holiday season due to difficulties meeting its financial obligations.
Features
My Twinn dolls are 23 inches tall. The dolls can be customized by choosing from nine eye colors, five skin tones and identifying features such as birthmarks and freckles. Hair color can be specified; so can hair length, texture and style. Customers can upload a photo to the site to ensure the doll's hair style and the hair style of the child match.
An outfit is included for the MyTwinn doll. Additional outfits can be purchased, including clothing in sizes XS to XXL. Clothing for the My Twinn doll ranges from $8 to $36, depending on the type of outfit. Clothing for girls ranges from $14 to $39 per piece. Clothing categories include casual, dresses, sleepwear and make believe.
Accessories--such as glasses, shoes, jewelry, and furniture--also are available.
Options
My Twinn does have other options available for those not interested in a custom doll. My Twinn Friend dolls are 23 inch vinyl dolls with a variety of hair styles, eye colors, skin tones and clothing options. My Twinn Toddlers are 20 inch soft, vinyl dolls. My Twinn Baby dolls are 20 inch soft-bodied toys; you can choose from several skin and eye color combinations.
Considerations
My Twinn dolls offer an opportunity for a child to have a hand-crafted doll with personalized features added to reflect the image of the doll's owner. The company, however, has had financial problems. It's working under its third owner in less than a decade. Buyer beware.
