How to Make a Russian Doll

The most popular type of Russian doll is the "nesting" or Matryoshka dolls. These dolls are similar to the Japanese Kokeshi dolls in that they contain no arms or legs. However, whereas Kokeshi dolls are formed with a body and ball-shaped head, Russian dolls are formed from one symmetrical body that is painted to denote the features of both the body and the face.

Instructions

  1. How to Make a Russian Doll

    • 1

Use an exacto knife to cut a circle a from the painter's tape. Make the circle as large or small as you want your doll's face to be.

    • 2

Press the circle of painter's tape firmly against the wooden egg where the face of the doll will appear.

    • 3

Use acrylic paint to paint the wooden egg. Most Russian dolls are only painted on the top half since the bottom will be covered with fabric.

    • 4

Allow the paint to dry, then remove the painter's tape from the egg. Paint the doll's face.

    • 5

Embellish the top half of the doll with decorative swirls, dots and flowers using the paint pens. Be creative.

    • 6

Spray a coat of polyurethane on the doll and allow it to dry.

    • 7

Coat the bottom of the doll with spray adhesive. Cut a piece of fabric to cover the bottom of the doll. Cut one inch slits at one inch intervals in the bottom of the fabric to assist in wrapping the fabric around the round bottom of the egg and keep the fabric from bunching. Wrap the fabric around the bottom of the egg, pressing it firmly to the spray adhesive to glue it to the egg.

Tie a ribbon around the egg to complete your Russian doll.
