How to Make a Doll's Chef Hat

Children love to dress their dolls in a variety of "occupational"outfits; just look at how many different professions Barbie has had over the years---waitress, astronaut, veterinarian, princess and nurse, just to name a few. If your child wants to be an airline pilot this week, odds are that Barbie has a pilot's uniform available somewhere. And it's not just Barbie. Any doll in "uniform" is part of a child's exploration of her possible future.

With the rising popularity of the cable channel Food Network, many children are thinking it might be neat to grow up and become a chef. And those children will tell you that a proper chef needs a chef's hat---and so does their doll.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the doll's head. For any size doll, measure the circumference (all the way around) the head. Add 0.25 inch for small dolls (like Barbie) and 0.5 inch for larger dolls, for seam allowance.

    • 2

Choose your fabric. A small scrap of any polyester, cotton or poly/cotton blend fabric will do. Most chef's hats are white.

    • 3

Cut out the hat. For a small doll, the base of the hat should be the head circumference plus the seam allowance by 1.5 inches (2 to 5 inches for larger dolls). Cut out one base. Cut out a circle that is an inch bigger all around for a small doll hat (and 2 to 5 inches for larger dolls) for the "poofy part" on top.

    • 4

Stitch the base. Stitch the ends of the base together and then hem one edge folding over as little as possible.

    • 5

Add the top. Stitch a running or gathering stitch 0.25-inch from the edge of the circle and gather to fit the base. Pin and sew the gathered edge to the unhemmed side of the base.
