How to Care for a Gotz Doll's Hair

Gotz dolls have a very manageable hair type for collectible dolls. The hair is rooted in the doll's head for durability and can endure a child's rough combing and brushing without excessive shedding. The doll's hair also retains shine and silkiness after the doll is machine-washed. Tangles may occur, but are removable if matting isn't significant. Though the doll is fairly sturdy, take care not to damage her hair. Here is a technique to gently care for your Gotz doll's hair.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal comb
  • Doll brush with metal bristles
  • Spray bottle
  • Mild shampoo
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Doll hair net
  • Snag-free elastics
  • Doll stand
  • Lingerie bag

Instructions

Detangle the Gotz doll's hair whenever it gets messy. Always detangle the doll's hair before brushing to prevent stretching the hair. To detangle, divide the doll's hair into four sections. Spray the first section with water. With a doll comb, begin detangling at the ends with short, careful strokes up to the roots. Once the tangles are removed, comb the entire section from roots to ends. Repeat on the remaining three sections. When the doll's hair is tangle-free, you can safely brush her hair.

Brush the doll's hair daily. Gotz doll hair generally does not tangle as much as other doll brands. However, regular brushing will prevent the occasional tangle or mat. With a metal-bristle doll brush, gently brush the doll's hair in sections. Once all the hair is smooth, brush it with normal strokes and style as desired. With a metal-bristle brush, you can brush wet or dry hair.

Keep the doll's hair in a braid in between styling sessions for general playtime. You'll have less matting—and detangling sessions.

Wash the doll's hair with mild shampoo. Gotz doll hair is strong enough to be washed in a mild laundry detergent. However, the doll's hair will stay softer if you wash it in mild shampoo between machine washes. To shampoo and condition her hair, place a hand towel around the doll's cloth body to keep it dry. Hold the doll upright in a sink and wet the doll's hair with warm water. Apply a dime-size amount of mild shampoo to the hair. Work the shampoo through her hair for 1 minute. Rinse the shampoo completely out of her hair. Wrap a second hand towel around her hair and gently squeeze out excess water. Spray a leave-in conditioner into her hair. Comb her hair to distribute the conditioner evenly. Stand the doll upright with a doll stand and let her hair hang loose to air-dry overnight.

Protect the Gotz doll's hair when you machine-wash her. Tie her hair back with a snag-free elastic or place a hair net on her hair to prevent tangling. Remember to place the entire doll in a lingerie bag to protect her vinyl limbs during washing. After washing, spray leave-in conditioner in her hair for softness and manageability. Find a doll hair net at a doll specialty shop, or cut a regular hair net to the right size. You can use any snag-free elastic or lingerie bag available at most grocery and drug stores.

Apply baby oil to extremely dry hair. If your Gotz doll's hair gets a little rough or dull, baby oil can restore softness and shine. Pour slightly less than a pea-size amount of baby oil in your hands and rub it into the doll's hair. Brush the doll's hair to distribute the oil. Her hair should now be silky and shiny.
