How to Care for a Curly-Haired American Girl Doll

American Girl carries a variety of dolls with different hair textures to represent the diversity of American children. Curly-haired American Girl dolls require a different hair care routine than straight-haired versions. If you have a curly-haired doll, you know that frizz and tangles occur quite easily. Instructions

    • 1

Detangle the doll's hair with a metal comb designed for dolls. Divide the doll's hair in sections of curls. Take a ringlet section and carefully work the tangles out from ends to scalp. Stroke the comb through the entire section of hair once it is tangle-free. Repeat on each section until all the tangles are removed.

    • 2

Wash the doll's hair with mild shampoo. Remove the doll's clothes and place a wash cloth over her cloth body. Hold the doll face down under the faucet and wet the hair with warm water. Be careful not let water get in her eyes because they can rust. Apply shampoo to her hair. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Wrap the doll's hair in a towel to absorb excess water and gently pat dry. Do not wring the hair. Apply leave-in conditioner and set curls. Air dry the doll's hair overnight.

    • 3

Set curls in sections. You can set curls after washing the doll's hair or whenever the curls need reviving. Begin with wet hair. Separate the hair into sections in the desired pattern. Comb a section of hair until smooth and tangle-free. Shape the hair into a curl by curling it around your finger for bigger curls. For tighter curls, hold a section of hair by the ends and gently twist the entire section into curls. Repeat on each section until all the hair is curled.

    • 4

Treat individual frizzy areas as needed. When a ringlet loses shape, treat the individual curl before the rest of the hairdo frizzes. Fill a spray bottle with distilled water and wet the frizzy strands. Comb the hair smooth. Twist curls or shape curls with your fingers, depending on the type of curl desired.

    • 5

Use leave-in conditioner on dry, brittle strands. Sometimes water is not enough to revive the doll’s curls and the hair remains frizzy even after following step 4. Apply leave-in conditioner to the affected strands and comb them smooth. Carefully shape curls with your fingers.

    • 6

Braid the doll’s hair for play time to prevent tangles. Create the braid by using sections of hair that do not disturb the curl pattern.

    • 7

Place a hair net over the doll’s curls at night to reset curls for the next day. After you have finished playing with your doll for the day, neaten her hair and revive any curls. After styling the doll’s hair, place a hair net over her hairdo. The hair net will give her tighter curls for the next day.
