How to Make a Flying Saucer With Paper Plates

Few things fire up the imagination more easily than alien space ships and flying saucers. You can make working models of these legendary spacecrafts with paper plates and other household items. A paper-plate flying saucer can be embellished and weighted to create an artistic and aerodynamic masterpiece. Experimenting with the design may lead to some surprising results and impressive performances. After perfecting your saucer, take it outside and watch it soar in a light breeze.

Things You'll Need

  • Dinner-size paper plates
  • Paper bowls
  • Glue or paste
  • Crayons or ink markers
  • Paper clips
  • Scissors
  • String or ribbon
  • Transparent tape

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a thin layer of glue over the bottom of one paper plate and the top of another. Nest them together with the glued sides facing each other. Let them sit for 10 minutes to allow the glue to dry.

    • 2

Place a paper bowl upside down on the bottom of the nested plates and make sure it is centered. Trace along the edge of the bowl to help line it up later. Remove the bowl and spread a thin layer of glue around its edge. Press it down on the plates using the drawn circle to help place it directly in the center.

    • 3

Draw windows, hatches and other things you would see on the outside of a flying saucer. Attach lengths of string or ribbons to the edges of the saucer with transparent tape or staples. Cut pieces of foil or colored papers and glue them to the saucer for decoration.

    • 4

Toss your saucer with a circular movement of your hand and mark how far it flies. Attach four paper clips to the base of the saucer and compare the performance of the now-modified craft. Experiment with the amount of weight by using additional paper clips, and the location of the weight by moving the clips to different groupings around the plates, to see how you can get more distance from, and control over, your saucer's flight.
