How to Build a Metal Erector Set

Erector sets are lauded by education professionals for moving beyond the simple grid-style plastic blocks. Using simple tools and hardware, Erector sets are built with a little more spatial thought and overall freedom of design. Additionally, building with an Erector set allows kids to learn the function and purpose of tools and hardware usage, preparing them for real tool usage and fostering fine motor skill development.

  Examine the instructions if the child is building a pre-designed plane, car, or other machine or vehicle.

  Organize the parts of the Erector set into key components, such as the main struts, connector pieces, and the individual nuts and bolts needed for the build.

  Align the holes of the various components according to the instructions. Slide the small bolts through the receiving holes. Rotate the corresponding nut over the threads of the bolts. Tighten by hand, then finish tightening with the relevant wrench from the Erector set.
