Decorate a Rubik's Cube
Change the texture, color or surface of the original Rubik's Cube. Fasten squares of fake fur, vinyl, fabric, thin wood veneer or even thin metal squares to the individual squares of the cube using adhesive or Velcro. Each side could be a different look, or you could make each square different. Keeping the colors consistent keeps the cube a workable puzzle, with a twist.
Build a Custom Rubik's Cube
Make your own Rubik's Cube. You can use almost any material, including acrylic, metal, or wood. Translucent dice or Lego pieces are also fun options. The cube has six center pieces, eight corner pieces and 12 edge pieces. Drill each cube and insert a cylindrical magnet to hold the pieces together. This is not the same construction method as the manufactured Rubik's Cube, which has a nylon core and a center spring, but it has the advantage of letting you change the shape and configuration of the cube in creative ways.
Make Patterns on the Rubik's Cube
Turn the Rubik's Cube squares to make decorative patterns. Mathematics devotees have come up with many algorithms to help achieve checkerboard, stripes and cube-in-cube designs, among others.
Make Furniture from Rubik's Cubes
Brightly colored coffee tables made in the Rubik's Cube design are popular modernist pieces, but often command steep prices when purchased commercially. A craft-oriented furniture builder could make a Rubik's Cube-inspired coffee table using home woodworking equipment. Tables and other furniture can be made from the cubes themselves, or just made to mimic the cubes' distinctive multicolored design.
