Leapster Handheld Games

Leapfrog is the company behind the marketing and development of the Leapster handheld games. These top notch electronics are educational products designed for preschoolers to grade school children. The Leapster, one of the best selling technology toys designed by Leapfrog, holds highly regarded accolades such as: Toy Industry Association's "Toy of the Year (Educational) 2011," National Parenting Center's "Seal of Approval," iParent Media's "Greatest Products Award," National Parenting Publication's "Honors Award" and Parents Choice Foundation's "Parents Choice Silver Honors Award."
  1. Types

    • The Leapfrog Leapster can be found in two versions and a variety of styles. Leapster 2 was designed for children from 3 to 8 years of age. It is available in two standard colors -- green/blue or pink/purple, as well as a special edition Disney-Pixar Toy Story 3 model in white and blue with yellow and red accent buttons.

The newer model displaying a slightly higher price tag is the Leapster Explorer. This handheld learning experience is targeted at children between the ages of 4 and 9. This unit is primarily white with a choice of accent colors including green, pink and red.

    Features

    • Some models are equipped with an attached stylus.

These durable, handheld systems are equipped with a touch screen, stylus, art studio and online access through a USB cable connection. The Leapster 2 comes standard with four starter games: Dragon Kingdom, Chicken Coop, Rabbit River and Shape Shop. Each game offers an educational experience by introducing to your child letters, numbers, shapes, matching and memory skills. An added bonus to purchasing this interactive console is that it is compatible with the game cartridges from other versions of the system, such as the original Leapster and the L-Max.

The Leapster Explorer is equipped with a library of more than 40 games and activities, including cartridge games, downloadable learning apps (games, e-Books, videos, flash cards and more) and a camera/video recorder. The Explorer has been upgraded from the previous model to include a high resolution finger touch screen, an interactive globe, a customizable pet and an automatic recognition that moves to the child's learning level. The Leapster Explorer is not compatible with any other Leapfrog gaming systems or cartridges like the Leapster 2 is.

    Play Methods

    • Your child can access the fun from both Leapfrog Leapster systems in a variety of ways -- through cartridge games purchased at a retailer, by surfing to Creativity Castle on Leapfrog's website where games can be played and rewards can be earned and downloading Leapfrog games and codes. Aside from the original cartridge play, all of the additional features will require a computer, USB cable and Internet connection.

    Games

    • Game systems feature a variety of Disney games.

A variety of game cartridges are available to play with the Leapster 2 and the Leapster Explorer. Leapfrog pairs with top selling characters, which include Disney's "Tangled," Disney-Pixar's "Toy Story 3" and "Up," "Dora the Explorer" and even games in global languages. The learning systems teach various skills like phonics, consonants, sight words, vowels, geography, art and design, shapes and math while giving parents the ability to view their child's learning path online.

    Bundles

    • Bundle your purchase and save.

For the indecisive or gift buyer, Leapfrog has bundled top selling games along with a handheld system to provide a perfect combination. Leapster 2 gift packs can include a Disney Fairytale theme containing a pink Leapster® Learning System along with Disney "Tangled," Disney "The Princess &the Frog" and Disney Fairies learning games or a Disney Pixar "Cars 2" bundle from Leapster Explorer made up of a Special Edition red/white system featuring Disney Pixar "Cars 2" and Disney Pixar "Cars 2" game.
