Instructions for a Totally Me Pottery Wheel

Children who want to dabble in various art mediums may enjoy some of the different art kits available from "Totally Me." Marketed through "Toys R Us," these art kits can appeal to children between the ages of 7 and 14. After making a bowl or vase with the pottery wheel, the child can then decorate it with bright paint colors to finish a beautiful art project.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the pottery wheel upside down and insert four "AA" batteries into the battery compartment. Close the battery compartment.

    • 2

Place the foot pedal onto the floor where you can reach it as you sit at the pottery wheel.

    • 3

Protect your work area with newspapers and place the pottery wheel onto the newspapers.

    • 4

Unwrap one package of clay (included in the pottery wheel kit) and knead it with your hands until the clay becomes soft and pliable.

    • 5

Insert the centralizer into the center of the pottery wheel by pushing it down into place until it clicks. Place the clay into the centralizer.

    • 6

Insert the tool into the center of the clay in the centralizer, pushing it into the clay to mold it. As you push the tool down, pull the centralizer out of the pottery wheel. Remove the tool also and you will have a clay shape in the center of the pottery wheel ready to mold.

    • 7

Place both thumbs into the center of the molded clay and press the foot pedal slowly with your foot to rotate the pottery wheel.

    • 8

Squeeze the clay lightly as you press the foot pedal to shape the clay. Experiment with squeezing the clay more or less to shape the clay the way you desire. Pull the clay as you press the pedal to make a taller vase. Use your fingers to shape the inside of the clay piece as you press the pedal.

    • 9

Use the sculpting tools (included in the kit) as you press the pedal to create designs on the clay. Hold a tool on the side of the clay and press the pedal to make lines, waves and shapes.

    • 10

Remove the clay from the pottery wheel by pulling the cutting cord (included in the kit) over the point where the clay sits on the wheel. Transfer the clay piece to a plate.

    • 11

Allow the clay piece to air dry for approximately 24 hours until the clay feels hard.

    • 12

Paint the clay piece with the paints included in the kit. Allow the paint to dry for approximately 24 hours.
