How to Make a Water Balloon Launcher for 100 to 200 Feet

Anyone who subscribed to Boy's Life magazine or Popular Science is familiar with ads promising the best water balloon launcher in the world. They could fly over trees! Amaze your friends! Made from two durable rubber bands! All for less than $10! These devices were totally awesome. They were also nothing more than slingshots made from easily obtainable materials. You can do it yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • 6 to 8 feet of rubber tubing (check home supply and medical supply stores)
  • Small piece of cloth, sewn to form a tube
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • 100-yard tape measure
  • Water balloons

Instructions

    • 1

      Tie both ends of the rubber tubing to form a circle.

      Slip the tube of cloth over the circle. Slide it to the center of the rubber tubing.

      Experiment. Have two friends each hold an end of the rubber tubing. Place a water balloon in the cloth. Pull the sling back a few feet and release it.

      Use the tape measure to see how far the balloon traveled. Adjust the distance you pull back on the sling shot to ensure the balloon goes 100 to 200 feet.
