Floor puzzles
The large size and big pieces of floor puzzles appeal to many five year olds. The chance to spread out a really large puzzle on the floor is a challenge that will excite your child. Floor puzzles feature dinosaurs, characters from books and television shows, animals, favorite vehicles, and even anatomy.
Puzzibits
Puzzibits is like a puzzle and an art project all in one. The sets come with bright, colorful interlocking pieces that are flexible. There are designs provided by the directions, but also plenty of pieces left to allow for free building. The pieces are sturdy, and the endless 3-D designs children can create allow for hours of creative play.
Alphabet puzzles
Five-year-olds vary in their reading ability and readiness. Chunky wooden alphabet piece puzzles can be great for letter recognition, and helping further associate letters, and their combinations, with their corresponding sounds. For more advanced five-year-olds, alphabet puzzles that spell out words are an excellent choice. Melissa and Doug, and other toy makers, sell wooden puzzles that feature a picture and then cut out inserts for each letter in the relevant words. Children search through wooden puzzle letters to find the needed pieces to spell out the words on each board.
Geography puzzles
A wonderful way to build geography knowledge is through fun puzzles. Many companies make 3D puzzles of the globe. Simpler puzzles of the United States help five-year-olds learn about the geography of our country as well as the unique shape and look of each state. Many map puzzles feature other information on each piece, such as state birds, capitals and common products from that state.
