Homemade Hover Boards

We have all imagined ourselves as 80s movie heroes zipping around on hover boards. Designed for a single user and similar to a skateboard, a hover board lifts its rider several inches off the ground. Even though the film flew their actors on cables, hover boards and other hover craft have been around since the 1950s. A Popular Science article from 1960 shows a homemade hover wheelbarrow. Larger hovercraft have been a science fair mainstay ever since.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the plywood 4 feet long by 2 feet wide. A hover board will be much larger than a regular skateboard to accommodate the blower motor. Round the corners of the board. Mark the board in 1 foot sections.

    • 2

Remove the tube from the leaf blower. Measure the mouth of the blower.

    • 3

Cut a hole at the 3 foot mark, or at the point exactly between the center of the board and the end. Use the hole saw on the drill to cut a uniform circle the size of the leaf blower's mouth.

    • 4

Lay the board on the plastic. Heavy plastic drop cloth or even an old shower curtain will work well. Fold the edges of the plastic over the edge of the board. Staple the plastic on top of the board all the way around. Remove any excess plastic. Tape the edges of the plastic to the board.

    • 5

Turn the board over. Make a 9-inch square of duct tape in the center of the board. As close to the center of this square as possible, attach the plastic disc with four wood screws.

    • 6

Measure one inch away from the round plastic lid. Draw a circle on the tape. Evenly space 1-inch circles around the drawn circle. Cut out these circles through the duct tape and the plastic.

    • 7

Turn the board over. Place the mouth of the leaf blower in the hole. Tape the blower in place. Place additional tape around the hole sealing the mouth of the blower to the board.

    • 8

Power up the leaf blower. Lift one edge of the board to allow the air to fill the cushion underneath.
