Simple Flannel Board Instructions

A flannel board is a wonderful medium for storytelling. Making the board itself can be a good project for a parent or grandparent and child. A favorite fairy tale or legend can come to life on the flannel board, or the board can be used to teach letters and numbers. The simple images in coloring books can serve as templates for figures, letters and numbers. Teachers will also find this simple flannel board to be a valuable tool in the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the off-white flannel to 40-inches square. Attach one edge of the flannel to the top edge of the artist canvas with one staple in the center of the edge.

    • 2

Stretch the flannel over the canvas and attach it to the bottom edge of the canvas with one staple in the center of the bottom edge. Add more staples to the top and bottom edges every inch, moving from the center staples, alternating from top to bottom, until you reach 2 inches from the canvas corners.

    • 3

Attach the flannel to the side edges of the canvas in the same manner. Fold the corners neatly at right angles and staple to attach.

    • 4

Cut simple figures, letters and numbers from the coloring book. Trace around the images on the colored felt with the ink pen.

    • 5

Cut out the felt images. Press the images to the felt board.
