How to Connect a Motor to a Toy Car

Turn a toy into a learning experience for your kids. Teach a lesson in solar energy and basic design and electricity by adding a solar-powered motor to an inexpensive plastic car or truck. You will find these lightweight plastic toys in most discount and dollar stores.

The solar panel and motor are available online or at hobby and electronics stores. The simple transmission is made with plastic gears available as a set and in hobby kits.

Things You'll Need

  • Molded plastic toy car
  • 24-mm hobby motor
  • 0.5-volt solar module with leads
  • 12-gauge electrical wire, 8 inches long
  • Small twist on wire connectors
  • SPDT mini slide switch
  • Hot glue gun
  • Plastic pinion gear
  • Plastic hub gear

Instructions

  1. Attach the Motor

    • 1

Turn the toy on its back and remove the bottom plate containing the wheels and axles with a Phillips screw driver.

    • 2

Remove one of the rear wheels and slide the axle out of the bottom plate. This will free up the axle so that you can attach the hub gear.

    • 3

Push the hub gear onto the free end of the axle and slide it down to the center of the axle. Reinsert the axle into the car bottom plate and reattach the wheel.

    • 4

Push the pinion gear onto the motor shaft and position the motor on the bottom plate with the teeth of the pinion gear meshed with the hub gear. Mark the spot where the motor is with a small piece of colored tape.

    • 5

Attach the motor onto the bottom plate with hot glue. Glue it in place with the gears meshed together and allow the glue to dry.

    Attach the Power

A solar module converts the sunlight into energy for the motor.

Remove the backing on the bottom of the Velcro patch and stick the adhesive side onto the top of the car body. Remove the backing from the top of the Velcro patch and press the bottom of the solar module down onto it. Attaching the solar module this way will allow easy removal of the solar module.

Disconnects are an easy way to attach wire without soldering.

Strip one-half inch of insulation from the each of the wires attached to the solar panel. Push the exposed wire of the red lead into the round end of a female disconnect, and crimp it closed with the crimping pliers. Push the female disconnect onto the left terminal of the slide switch.

    • 8

Attach a female disconnect to a piece of the 12-gauge wire and push it onto the other switch terminal. Fasten the switch to the rear of the car body with the hot glue gun and allow glue to dry.

    • 9

Connect the black wire leading from the solar module to the black lead of the motor with a twist-on wire connector. Strip one-half inch of insulation from the end of the 12-gauge wire and join it to the red wire of the motor with a twist-on wire connector.

    • 10

Reattach the car bottom plate with a Phillips screwdriver. Take the car into the sun and turn on the switch to make it go.
