Singer Child's Sewing Machine Instructions

Singer has long been producing sewing machines for private and industry use. Singer's child's version of a simple chain-stitch machine teaches children how to operate a basic sewing machine without any frills or extras. Because the machine is battery-operated, it sews at a slower rate than adult-sized machines, reducing the likelihood of injury or accidents. The machine still has a sharp needle and moving parts, so the child sewer should always be supervised by an adult.

Instructions

  1. Filling and Inserting a Bobbin

    • 1

Lift the knob on the spool compartment to lift the bobbin winder. Turn the crank-wheel counter clockwise, clicking the winder lever into place. Put a spool into the compartment.

    • 2

Feed the thread through the first thread guide nearest the bobbin. Close the cover. Put an empty bobbin on the winder and wind clockwise three times. Adjust the machine's speed to "slow." Verify that batteries are in the machine and turn on the machine. Depress the foot pedal.

    • 3

Keep the thread straight with your fingers as it winds around the bobbin. When the bobbin is full, lift your foot from the pedal, stopping the winder, and cut the thread with your scissors. Turn off the machine. Remove bobbin. Lower the lever back into the stored position.

    • 4

Push aside the spring latch to remove the bobbin compartment cover. Insert the full bobbin. Lift the lever. Pull about 4 inches of thread from the bobbin, sliding it into the slot in the bobbin case. Lower the lever. With your fingers pull the thread to see if it's moving too tight or too loose. You can adjust the tension of the thread by using a screwdriver to tighten or loosen the screw controlling the tension. Close the lid, leaving the thread hanging outside in front of the machine.

    Threading the Machine

    • 5

Place a spool into one of the spool compartments. Feed the thread through the thread guides starting with the nearest guide and working toward the farthest guide, and through the eye of the needle.

    • 6

Lift the lever of the pressure foot with your hand. Pull 4 inches of the thread toward the sewing machine's back. Turn the crank-wheel counter clockwise until you see the machine's needle insert into the plate.

    • 7

Turn the wheel while watching the needle enter the plate as far as it will go. Continue turning the wheel until the needle re-emerges with a bobbin thread connected within the needle's thread. Pull this thread out gently about 4 inches toward the rear of the machine.

    Sewing with the Machine

    • 8

Pull the threads toward the machine's back. Raise the foot and insert your fabric beneath. Lower foot. Turn on. Depress pedal with your foot to begin sewing.

    • 9

Hold the fabric loosely with your hands to keep it straight. Because the machine sews in a chain stitch, you must reverse sew to lock your stitches. At the end of the stitching line, lift the foot. Turn fabric in the opposite direction, drop the foot, and resew over the previous stitches.

    • 10

Remove the sewn item by lifting the foot, and pulling out about 3 inches of thread, lifting the item away from the machine. Cut threads.
