Top 10 Spy Gadgets

Spies are cool characters. Masters of secrecy, and experts with gadgets. The gadgets themselves are the cool parts, as they give the spy a unique ability to capture and pass on information. A spy should not be without some of the essential tools, such as the following 10 tools, which do everything from breaking in to taking data. Some of these gadgets you won't be able to get, so if you're playing spies, you'll probably have to fake them.
  1. Lock Picking Set

    • One of the things a spy needs to be able to do is get into rooms he's not supposed to enter. Lock picking is really hard without the right equipment, but even the most simple lock pick can open any door. At the very least, a lock picking set should have one tension wrench and one pick--although most come with a variety of both.

    Hidden Camera

    • A spy needs some way to bring the information he's been sent to collect back. Memory can only go so far, but a picture is worth a thousand words. For that, things like the cigarette lighter camera or another disguised device that can discreetly take photos even while someone is looking are ideal.

    Electronic Ear

    • Electronic ears are perfect devices for capturing even whispers of an informant from a far-off place. These devices are large and unwieldy, and are rarely used in the open. However, when someone is listening with one of these devices, it amplifies the sound wherever you're pointing the object.

    Listening Devices

    • Often called bugs, tiny microphones are much more discreet versions of the electronic ear. The downside to these is that you have to plant them secretively, meaning you might have to use them in conjunction with some of your other gadgets. However, if you plant one of these in the right place, you can get someone talking in his natural habitat about anything at all.

    Tracer

    • GPS devices are extremely important, because if you're targeting someone--either to find him later, or sneak into his home while he's out--you will need to trace him. An option is to plant a device on him that keeps you posted on his movements. The tracer device is usually small, and much harder to plant on a person than a vehicle.

    Slicks

    • A hiding spot for your information or other valuables is invaluable, and many spies put together what is sometimes called a "slick" in which to hide things. The trade-off with a slick is that the more secure it is, the harder it is to get at when you need it. Book vaults, hide-a-keys, and devices like that are often used as simple ones--although it's possible to hide items in anything you can hollow out.

    Biometric Security

    • Fingerprinting, retinal scanning, and in extremely rare situations other biometric assessment devices, can be extremely useful to make your hiding spots or other information even more secure. Your fingerprints are unique, as is your retina. There are some devices that only open or unlock when presented with the right information.

    Encoders

    • The right tools can overcome whatever measures you have taken to keep your information hidden and locked away, That's why a lot of spies will encode their information even further. All of this is done with code machines, encoders, and basic ciphers. Some of them require tools and others just a pen and paper.

    Self-Defense

    • Spies usually try to avoid being seen, or at least being caught. When that fails, they try to take their opponent out as quickly and silently as possible. Guns are messy, and can be traced. However, a taser or a throwing knife can be used more quietly and all evidence taken with them. Obviously, these "toys" are not for kids playing spy games.

    Intrusion Gear

    • Breaking into the building is made a lot easier when you have the right tools. Lock picking is only one option, but someone with a grapple hook and a good throwing arm could bypass the main doors and come in through the roof. If noise isn't an issue, some spies might also use a "universal key," an explosive that can make even a wall into a door.
