Getting Started
Create a pattern for the teapot on paper using a pencil. Draw a rectangle 8.75 inches by 3.75 inches. Draw five 1-inch V's evenly spaced along the top, with the top of the rectangle at the top of the V, spaced 1 inch apart. Draw a circle 2 inches in diameter to form the bottom of the teapot. Draw a rectangle 4.5 inches tall by 1 inch wide, for the handle. Draw another rectangle 1.5 inches tall by 1 inch wide for the spout.
Make a pattern for the cups. Cut the bottom off a paper or plastic cup and cut once down the length of the cup. Trace the shape onto paper.
Cut the pattern pieces out of the paper.
Place and pin all patterns to acrylic felt and cut the fabric along the edges of the patterns. Cut one body and lid, and four of the bottom pieces (this will also serve as your lid) for the teapot. Cut two bottom pieces and two side pieces for each cup.
Remove the pattern from the fabric.
Sewing the Teapot
Fold the teapot body in half and hand sew along the shorter edge with embroidery thread. Fold the teapot inside out and sew V cut edges together, so they form an O at the top of the teapot.
Sew along the border at the bottom all the way around. Pull the thread to form a pleated edge with an O about the size of the top O formed by sewing the V cut edges together. Sew two pieces of the bottom circle onto the bottom, over the pleats.
Fill the teapot with fiberfill and set it aside.
Sew two circle pieces together for the top of the teapot, leaving an opening for fiberfill. Fill the piece with fiberfill and sew the opening closed.
Sew the cap onto the top of the teapot.
Fold the cut handle piece in half and sew along the bottom and long side. Stuff the top with fiberfill and sew closed. Sew the handle onto the side of your stuffed teapot by attaching the top and bottom along the seam of the teapot.
Fold the spout in half and sew along the bottom and side. Stuff it with fiberfill and sew closed. Sew the spout onto the opposite side of the teapot from the handle, attaching it at the bottom of the spout.
Sewing Cups
Fold one side of the cup together and sew at the edge. Fold the cup inside out so your stitching is inside.
Put the other piece inside the sewn cup and use pins to hold the unsewn edges together. Pull the inside piece out and sew the edges together. Put it back inside the larger cup.
Sew around the border at the bottom of the cup. Draw the thread tight to form pleats and knot it. Sew the bottom two pieces onto the bottom of the teacup.
Turn the cup over and sew decorative stitching along the top of the cup. Repeat this section for as many cups as you wan for the cloth play tea set.
