As of 2008, The LEGO Group was the sixth largest toy manufacturer. Company headquarters are located in Billund, Denmark. However, production facilities are also located in eastern Europe and Mexico.

The first LEGO bricks were wooden; production of plastic bricks began in 1942.
Types of LEGO pieces
According to the LEGO Group there are approximately 2,350 different LEGO elements in 52 colors.
Creative play
LEGO figures were introduced in 1974 and brought about more creative play. In 1998 LEGO Group formed an exclusive agreement with Lucasfilm Ltd. to develop LEGO sets based on the Star Wars movies.
Fun fact
The company name, LEGO, was created by the founder of the company who shortened and combined the two Danish words "leg godt," which meant "play well." Unbeknownst to him, the Latin word "LEGO" meant "I put together."
