Speak &Spell is a product designed in the 1980s and refined through the present day. It is a simple piece of equipment that students can use to learn how to spell. Although it is an old-style toy, Gera Jacobs, Ph.D., professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of South Dakota, gives several suggestions on how you can use a Speak &Spell today, even in a classroom full of other types of technology.

Individual Work
- A chance for students to work with the Speak &Spell on an individual basis is the best way for them to learn anything from it. Students can type in words, look at words already programed into the Speak &Spell and listen to the Speak &Spell spell the words. Individual work with the Speak &Spell is the best way for students to understand how to spell words.
Pass the Speak and Spell
- Students can play a pass the Speak &Spell game in order to learn more about spelling. In the game, a student would choose a word and type it into the Speak &Spell. Then, the Speak &Spell will announce the word out loud. The student should pass the Speak &Spell to the classmate next to her, and that student would try to spell the word using the product's keypad. If he spells the word correctly, he can choose a word for the classmate next to him to spell.
