How to Build a Children's Kitchen Set

Building a children's kitchen set is a creative way to encourage kids to play games based on real-life skills. It introduces them to grown-up responsibilities and everyday chores. If you have extra time and money, you can build an intricate children's kitchen set from wood. However, if you're short on time and money, you can use sturdy cardboard boxes and clever painting techniques to create a simple kitchen set instead.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 square cardboard boxes, 3 cubic feet
  • Tacky glue
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Large, plastic bowl
  • Box cutter
  • Craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Thin permanent markers
  • 2 removable, plastic hooks
  • Garbage bag

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the flaps closed on the cardboard boxes, and glue them shut. Place the boxes on garbage bags, and position them so that the flap ends face the sides and the smooth cardboard faces the top and front. Let dry.

    • 2

Use a pencil to sketch four stove burners on the top of the first cardboard box. Add four knob shapes above the burners. Use the pencil and ruler to create an oven door on the front of the box.

    • 3

Turn the large plastic bowl upside down, and trace the shape onto the top of the second cardboard box in the middle. Sketch two knobs and a faucet spout on the upper-top of the box. Use a box cutter to cut a circle 1 inch smaller in diameter than the bowl sketch.

    • 4

Use an even layer of craft paint to cover the plain parts of each cardboard box for the children's kitchen set. Let dry.

    • 5

Use craft paint to color in the shape sketches such as the burners, knobs and oven door. Let dry. Try making the outer part of the burner black and a small swirl toward the middle red, like a hot burner.

    • 6

Use thin permanent markers to outline and detail the objects on the oven and sink of the kitchen set. For example, use a thin black marker to create dial marks on the oven knobs or a handle on the oven door.

    • 7

Secure a removable hook on the left side of the sink for hanging towels. Secure a hook on the right side of the oven for hanging aprons. Place the bowl in the sink hole to create a sink.
