Instructions

  1. Surveillance

    • 1

Cut a piece of black construction paper that's 8 to 10 times the diameter of the marble, and 5 times the width.

    • 2

Put the marble midway on one narrower end of the paper, and roll the paper tightly around the marble.

    • 3

Stick the tube together with tape to complete your keyhole spyglass.

    • 4

Place the marble on a keyhole or small hole and peer through the tube. The image will be upside down, but you can now see into the room.

    • 5

Put the mouth of the plastic cup against the door and your ear on the bottom to hear what's going on inside.

    Communication

    • 6

Use the compass to draw two circles on a sheet of construction paper. Make one about a half-inch smaller than the other.

    • 7

Write the letters of the alphabet evenly distributed around the edges of both circles, which will become letter wheels. For extra security, randomly scatter them around the wheel, so that A, B and C aren't next to each other. Mark the X on the outer circle.

    • 8

Cut both wheels out. Put the smaller one on top of the larger so that the letters line up, and push the split pin fastener through the center of both.

    • 9

Pick a letter and line it up with X, and then use a mnemonic device or a prearranged phrase to remember those letters.

    • 10

Cut a thin strip of paper, wrap it around a No. 2 pencil so that you have a continuous surface to write on, and write your phrase on one side of the pencil. Then unwrap the paper and write random letters to hide your message.

    • 11

On a scrap piece of paper, write the message you will encode. Look at the first letter of the message on the inner wheel, and write the corresponding outer letter on the coded message. Repeat for the rest of your message.

    • 12

Give the code wheel a turn so that your message doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Pass the message, phrase and wheel separately to your associates.

    Security

    • 13

Check that your old book will not be used again, and that you can damage it. Open the book to a few pages in, and draw a rectangle about an inch or so in from all of the margins.

    • 14

Carefully cut out the shape through several pages, and repeat until you have room to store things inside the book.

    • 15

Check that the book closes neatly, and then load your book safe with any secrets you have.

    • 16

Hide the book safe on a bookshelf, somewhere that looks natural but that you can find again.

    • 17

Take a piece of hair and dampen it with saliva at both ends. Place the wet hair so it goes across the gap between your book and a neighboring book. Next time you pick up your book, check the hair: if it's broken or loose, someone has been in your safe.
