Puzzles
Simple puzzles are a wonderful activity for a 1-year-old. The puzzle pieces should be large and easy for a toddler to grasp. The pieces will probably be going into his mouth from time to time, so if they are painted, make sure the paint is nontoxic. The pieces should also be large enough to prevent him from chocking. Packaged puzzles will be labeled with recommended ages. A basic beginner's puzzle will have about four puzzle pieces. The puzzle will have a theme of shapes, animals or other objects and will be brightly colored. Puzzles are a simple, quiet toy that will engage and stimulate a 1-year-old.
Stacking Toys
Blocks or rings will occupy a 1-year-old boy and develop hand and eye coordination skills. An adult can also play with the toddler by stacking blocks and having the toddler knock them over. Taking turns to place a block to make a tower is also a fun activity for a 1-year-old.
Push and Pull
Most 1-year-olds are walking, and pushing or pulling a toy is a wonderful way for them to be entertained. This type of toy often has a pop-up device or noise maker that the toddler activates when he pushes and pulls. This also helps develop his walking skills; holding onto the handle will give him that little bit of guidance he may need for balance.
Shape-Sorter Cubes
Toy shape-sorter cubes are made of heavy plastic. They are hollow with shapes cut into the six sides. Each shape is different and has a corresponding block that is inserted into the hole. Once the toddler finds the correct hole and slides the piece into it, the pieces stay inside the cube until one side is opened and the shapes are emptied out. This toy is colorful and intriguing for a toddler. A 1-year-old will be entertained and challenged at the same time. The cube will also produce sounds when shaken with the blocks inside.
