How to Make a LEGO Teddy Bear

Have you given your sweetheart one too many teddy bears on Valentine's Day and birthdays? Next time try a unique twist -- a LEGO teddy bear. You can make one by following the simple instructions below. LEGO bricks allow the teddy bear to stand on its own. The color that you choose for the teddy bear is up to you. It is also possible to make the teddy bear larger by modifying these plans so that the bear is as large as you wish.

Things You'll Need

  • Four 4-by-6 stud thin blocks (panels)
  • Twenty four 2-by-4 stud, thick blocks
  • One 8-by-16 stud, thick block panel
  • Two 10-by-2, thick blocks
  • One 14-by-2, thick block
  • Two 8-by-2, thin blocks
  • Three 6-by-2, thick blocks
  • Two 3-by-2, thick blocks
  • Two studs (for eyes)
  • One stud for the nose
  • (Optional) one 4-by-4, thin block

Instructions

    • 1

In building a LEGO device, the term thick-block panel means a panel that is the thickness of three of the thinner blocks. The thinner blocks are about two studs thick. The studs are the knobs that stick out of the top of each plastic block. When measuring a block by length and width, the blocks are measured by counting the number of studs that run the length and the width of the block. This measurement is then listed as 2-by-4 to indicate the two numbers. The terms brick and block are used interchangeably.

Make the arms and legs of the teddy bear. Get a thin 4-by-6 stud LEGO panel. Get thick bricks and attach them to completely cover the underside of this thin-block panel to a depth of two thick blocks. This can be achieved by laying three 2-by-4 stud, thick-blocks side by side for each layer. Repeat this process four times.

    • 3

Build the main body. Get a 8-by-16 stud, thick-block panel. One stud in from the side and two studs up from the bottom, plug in a thick brick that is 10-studs high and 2-studs wide so that it runs parallel to the long edge of the thick panel. Do the same thing on the other side to make the bear symmetrical. There should be a gap in between the two blocks. Lay a 12-by-2, thick brick into the gap so that there is one stud that goes past the bricks on either side of the groove toward both ends.

On the back of the body, add the joints for the limbs. Get a 10-by-4 stud, thin block panel and place it three studs down from the more vacant end of the body on the back side. This is the joint for the arms. There should be one row of studs that sticks out on both the right and left sides of the body. Ont the back of the body at the end away from the arm joints will be placed the 8-by-6 stud panel that forms the joint for the legs. Let the 8-stud width of this block overlap the eight stud width of the body for five rows, leaving only one row exposed at the bottom of the body.

Make the head of the teddy bear with an 8-by-2 stud, thin brick placed next to a 6-by-2 stud, thin brick. On the other side of the 6-by-2 stud brick, add another brick that is thin and 8-by-2 studs in dimension. Slide the two taller thin bricks up to form 2-by-2 stud ears. At the first level below the ears where the three thin blocks all go across and there is no gap, lay a 6-by-2 stud thick block across all three. Repeat the process with a 6-by-2 block next to the one above it and then do it again. Build up a layer at the lower end on top of the face with two 3-by-2 blocks that form a single 3-by-4 muzzle. Add two clear studs for eyes and a stud in the center of the muzzle for the nose.

Place the head on the studs of the body at the more vacant end so that there is a row of exposed studs on either side (left and right) and so that there are two rows of studs connecting the head to the body. Each limb should be attached at the joint so that the thin edge of the joint is inserted at one of the joint's narrow ends between the first and second rows of studs.
