How to Make Simple Science Toys

If you are an educator, or just love to do science projects with your children, then you know how valuable simple science toys can be. Simple science toys can be used as visual aids to inspire and excite young minds during a science lesson. Although science toys can be quite costly when purchased from educational resource companies, you can easily and inexpensively duplicate these toys at home, using simple household items.

Instructions

Make a soda bottle tornado. Collect two empty 1-liter soda bottles and rinse them out thoroughly. Fill one of the bottles all the way to the top with regular tap water. Add 5 drops of food coloring, choosing the color that you like the best. Twist one end of the tornado tube connector (see Resources below) on the end of the filled soda bottle. Screw the empty soda bottle onto the top of the tornado tube connector. Flip the soda bottles upside down and watch the tornado in action.

Make a straw horn. Take any plastic drinking straw and hold it in your hand. Using scissors, snip off the "corners" of one end of the straw, leaving a point in the middle. Trim the straw so that the point is neither too short nor too long. Blow through the pointed end to hear the horn sound.

Make a hydroplane balloon. Using glue, attach the water bottle spout to the CD. Make sure that you place it over the hole in the center of the disc. Let the glue dry completely. Once the glue is dry, close the spout so that it does not let any air out through the CD hole. Inflate the balloon and carefully attach the end of the balloon to the water bottle spout. While grasping the balloon, carefully pull up the water bottle spout, releasing the air out through the bottom of the CD. The hydroplane balloon will take off across a table or any flat surface.
