How to Make Foam Letters

Go to the local craft store and buy some craft foam and letter stencils. The craft foam usually comes in packs of different-colored sheets or rolls. There are nonsticky-back and sticky-back craft foam available. If you don't want to buy stencils then find a coloring book with letters in it or draw the letters freehand.

Decide which color you want each letter to be. Craft foam can be bought in packs of one color or a variety of colors. If drawing the letters freehand then you'll need to decide on how big the letters will be. To be creative you could always put a layer of craft glue on each letter and then sprinkle glitter over them. Make sure that none of them will be chewed on though if glitter is added.

Trace the stencil onto a sheet of craft foam. Use a pencil to trace around the stencils. Even if you make the letters freehand it would be wise to draw them first on a piece of paper and then trace on the foam. To make the foam more sturdy, trace the stencils on a piece of cardboard, cut them out and glue to the back of the foam letters.

Cut out the foam letters. Slowly cut around each letter with the hobby knife. Scissors can be used to cut the foam but the edges may be slightly pinched together. Care needs to be taken when cutting the small spaces that some letters have. The hobby knife is perfect for this job.

Play with your new foam letters. Kids can have fun playing with these foam letters on carpet, wood floors or a kitchen table and even on their beds. Help your small children learn new words by arranging the letters. Their foam alphabet can also be placed in the tub during bath time. Once wet, the foam will stick to the side of the tub or shower.
