How to Design Your Own Monster

If you want to design your own monster, for a story, costume or just for the pleasure of it, all you really need is a bit of paper and some imagination. However, if you find yourself stuck for idea, there are a few tricks you can use top get yourself started and places from which to draw inspiration. Look to nature for help and then mix things up.

  Go online, search for, and play with, one of the many monster creators you can find there. These allow you to pick various options and design monsters which can even be animated.

  Search pictures of animals online. Get as wide a variety as possible, including insects, sea creatures and birds. Print them out.

  Cut the pictures up and join the parts together to create a new type of creature. Give it lots of heads, put tentacles where the legs might have been, an insect head on a mammal and whatever else you can imagine.

  Draw the monster you have created. Add extra features and/or textures to make it even more horrifying.

  Color in the monster. You might want to use just one of the patterns and textures from the animals you have collected or add an entirely new one.
