Toys That Keep Infants Interested

Newborn babies are immobile and, of all the senses, their eyesight is the least-developed at birth. Newborns also can only distinguish contrasting colors and a human face clearly. At infancy, the best toys for a baby are mostly ones they can see and hear. After a few months, other toys can be added to keep your baby interested for a while.
  1. Mobile

    • Mobile are good toys for all infants because they are visually stimulating. Newborns are attracted to mobiles with different attachments, such as black-white-red graphics, and pictures of a human face. For older infants, mobiles with primary colors and various pictures, and mobiles that come with music, are stimulating. As your baby gets older and can reach and grab, keep the mobile out of reach.

    Rattles

    • Rattles are another stimulating toy for a baby. It provides auditory stimulation with the noise and babies also follow the movement of the rattle with their eyes when shaken. It also is a toy they can hold and play with on their own. Some rattles also serve as teething toys.

    Play Mat or Activity Gym

    • As your infant grows, a play mat or activity gym is sure to keep him interested. Both feature various types of stimulation with bright colors, textured fabrics and different characters and toys. The fabrics are soft and pleasurable, and some include a teether and loops to attach other toys. More elaborate play mats and activity gyms are equipped with music and lights.

    Stuffed Toys

    • Many stuffed toys are on the market, which are good for infants due to their soft fabrics and contrasting colors. Stuffed animals such as penguins, pandas, dalmations and zebras are good choices for infants. Any eyes, buttons or other attachments must be secured tightly, or purchase a stuffed toy with no attachments at all.
