How to Make a Crinkle Baby Toy With a Bell

Baby toys stimulate your child's brain. Including textural and sound elements, such as crinkling and bells, to a toy helps aid in your child's development. Although you could purchase a stimulating toy at your local pet supply store, making your own requires little time and effort. Making your own toy lets you choose a shape and design to match your child's room décor or a design that excites the child.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the shape for your baby toy on a piece of paper to create a template. Choose a shape that is easy to cut out, such as a heart, flower or bird silhouette. Make the shape a minimum of 4 inches. Cut out the shape.

    • 2

Pin the template to a piece of colored felt that matches your shape's theme using straight pins. For example, use blue for a bird, pink for a flower or red for a heart. Cut out the shape following the template. Remove the straight pins and place the template on a second piece of felt. Use the same color or a complementing color. Pin the template in place and cut out the shape. Remove the pins and discard the template.

    • 3

Use a needle and thread to sew two 1/2-inch bells to the center of one of cutouts. Sewing the bell onto the felt prevents choking if your baby manages to rip the toy open.

    • 4

Cut a piece of plastic bag or an empty baby wipe bag into the same shape and size as the felt cutouts. Apply hot glue around the edge of the plastic and press it against the felt cutout without the bells.

    • 5

Use straight pins to attach the two cut out shapes together with the bells and plastic on the outside. Sew along the edge of the shape using a sewing machine with a 1/4-inch seam. Sew through the plastic Leave 2 inches unsewn. Remove the straight pins.

    • 6

Turn the sewn shape inside out, pulling the inside out through the 2-inch hole you left.

    • 7

Fold the open edges inward to create a 1/4-inch seam. Sew along the edge to secure the opening.
