How to Change Batteries in a Leap Frog Discovery Ball

The LeapFrog Discovery Ball is a popular infant toy that engages the senses of children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years and is promoted as a way to improve motor skills. The blinking lights and music are fun, but will eventually drain the batteries. Removing and changing the batteries of a LeapFrog Discovery Ball is more complex than with many other toys because the battery chamber is hidden inside the ball.

Things You'll Need

Coin
Small Phillips head screwdriver
3 new AA batteries

Instructions

  Locate the "parent safety latch" on the base of the Discovery Ball and slide it into the "down" position. You will find the latch on the side of the base directly below the release button.

  Press the release button on the side of the base to remove the ball. This will allow access to the battery door.

  Locate the dial on the ball. This dial will be on the end of the ball and will be slightly recessed.

  Insert the coin into the dial and turn it to unlock the dial.

  Grasp the ball in both hands and twist the sides in opposite directions. As you twist, pull the blue side away to separate it from the white center piece.

  Find the rectangular battery door on the white piece of the ball and use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the door on.

  Remove and dispose of the old batteries and install the new ones according to the diagram on the inside of the battery compartment.

  Replace the battery door and screw it closed tightly. Push the ball together and twist it to reassemble. Double check to make sure it is reassembled properly before putting it back on the base.

  Check the parent safety latch to confirm that it is still in the "down" position and slide the ball back into the base, making sure that the end caps of the ball are properly aligned with the base's inside arms.

  Slide the parent safety latch into the "up" position.
