Nonetheless, the high-tech original remains popular among robot enthusiasts, many of whom apply home-brewed modifications to the bot, including mods to its speaker. Instructions

    • 1

Power down the Robosapien and completely remove its four D-cell batteries to avoid electric shock while working on the robot.

    • 2

Remove the Robosapien's back panel, which covers the robot's main control board and speaker. This panel forms the back of the Robosapien's upper torso and features eight diagonal slats that serve as speaker holes. Using a small flat-head screwdriver or hobby knife, turn each screw securing the panel counterclockwise until it comes loose. Take the cover off when all the screws are loose. Put the screws in a safe place so you can use them to reinstall the panel.

    • 3

Gently pry the speaker from its plastic casing using a hobby knife. You'll see the round, bronze-colored speaker right in the center of the Robosapien's back as soon as you remove the rear panel. Only glue holds the speaker to its casing. Insert the blade of the knife between the edge of the speaker and casing, gently working your way around the perimeter to loosen the speaker from the glue. Pop the speaker out of the casing with a prying motion.

Cut the speaker free from the Robosapien. Snip the yellow wire that connects the speaker to the robot using a pair of scissors if you don't plan on inserting your own custom speaker. If you do, leave the wire intact by gently removing it from the small circuit board on the speaker -- simply pinch each end of the wire and pull.
