How to Roll a Foam Airplane Wing

An RC or foam airplane needs a balanced center of gravity for maximum control and to create a straight flight pattern. Even the slightest weight adjustment to the foam wings can cause the airplane to roll. If you want your foam airplane wing to roll with less effort, determine the weight distribution of the plane and add weight. A small deviation in weight allows you to roll the wings but at the expense of some control.

Things You'll Need

  • Strings
  • Foam airplane wing ballasts

Instructions

    • 1

Place a string underneath the tail of the airplane. Wrap around the bottom and hold the two loose ends above the plane between your thumb and index finger.

    • 2

Wrap another string around the nose of the plane or the propeller. Again, hold the two ends of the string above the plane. Use your thumb and index finger to secure.

    • 3

Lift the airplane off the ground by the strings. Pay close attention to the way it rests. A airplane with balanced foam wings remains perfectly straight. Any imbalances causes the foam wings to roll to one side.

    • 4

Attach a foam wing ballast to one side of the wings if it rests perfectly straight when lifted by the strings. The added weight of the ballast creates an uneven weight distribution which, in turn, allows the foam airplane wings to roll.
