How to Make a Paper Boomerang in a V-Shape

Boomerangs date back to 8000 B.C. when Australian Aborigines developed them as a hunting tool. The boomerang is unique in shape and action, with a V-like frame which catches the air in such a way as to cause it to return to the place from which it was launched, if thrown properly. Making your own boomerang from paper requires some craft-making skill, and the most basic of supplies.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Use your pencil to draw the outline of a V-shaped boomerang onto your cardboard. The outline should measure about 9 inches in length along each wing, and about 2 inches wide throughout. The ends of each wing should be rounded and the overall look should reflect the outline of a jet airplane.

Use your scissors to cut along the pencil line until your cardboard boomerang outline emerges.

    • 3

Use your scissors to cut two foam scraps to a length of 6 inches. Use your retractable razor knife to cut the foam strips into ovals. The ovals should measure 6 inches in length, 2 inches in depth and should have one flat side and one curved side. The idea is to recreate the lift of an airplane wing so that your cardboard boomerang stays airborne when thrown. The upper side of the foam pieces should start out flat at one end and gradually rise to a peak of 2 inches, before curving back downward at the other end.

Use your tape to fasten one foam piece to each wing of the boomerang. The foam pieces should be attached to the bottom of the boomerang, along the leading edge of both wings. With the boomerang turned upside-down, place one foam piece on the inside edge of the left side wing, and one on the outer edge of the right side wing. If you are left-handed, place one on the outside edge of the left-hand wing, and the other on the inside edge of the right-hand wing. The thicker edge of the foam piece should face the edge of the wing.

Use markers and colored pencils to decorate your new boomerang as you see fit.
